7 Steps to Make Your Podcast Stand Out From the Crowd

To have a successful podcast you need to reach the right people, in the right way. Understanding how to market your podcast effectively can contribute immensely to your success.

On a recent episode of Should I Start a Podcast, we shared Nathan Chan’s insightful speech from We Are Podcast 2016. Here, Nathan Chan shares seven marketing strategies that will draw in new subscribers, increase downloads and make you stand out from the podcast melee.

Be Consistent

It’s not surprising that listeners will return if they know exactly when a new episode is coming. Nathan insists that sticking to a deadline, and aiming to release at least one podcast a week, can play a crucial role in winning a loyal following and gaining traction in the long run.

Reach Out To Other Influencers

A great way to reach new listeners is to take advantage of interviews. It’s a two way door, by inviting influencers within your niche to come onto your show, the likelihood of it being reciprocated is very high. This will build your presence within your target market, and potentially direct a new audience to your podcast.

Get Reviews

Nathan’s third point starts with, “Reviews are everything in terms of downloads.” They can get you on track to being found, as well as conquering the dreaded algorithm. You can go about getting reviews by having a call to action in your podcast, within emails or even suggest leaving a review if someone asks how they can help. It’s a simple, non-intrusive ask, as a way of getting your stats up.

Stand Out With Great Cover Art and Written Copy

With the average person scanning content and developing an impression in just 50 milliseconds, your cover art had better look good. Use strong, eye-catching colours, succinct wording, and a good picture.

When it comes to your written copy, the description is your new listener’s introduction to you; who you are, your achievements, and what listeners can expect if they take the time to listen to your podcast.

Embrace Your Uniqueness

Your uniqueness is what sets you apart from your peers. So what do you offer that others don’t? Do you do long-form episodes, or are they quick and snappy? Will we laugh, cry, or be enthralled by amazing storytelling? Make sure that people know exactly how you are going to be taking up their time, and why they should choose you over everyone else.

Amp Up Your Promotion

When it comes to promoting your podcast, investing your time in multiple promotional avenues absolutely pays dividends. Utilizing social media(;) such as linking your podcast in your Instagram bio, investing in automated distribution tools, or converting your audio into video files for Facebook, means you will gain a wider outreach.

Get Other Guests To Promote Your Podcast

You can get your guests to promote your show by incorporating easily shareable links to social media platforms when you feature them on your website. If you have a catalogue of past interviews that are still getting hits, try reaching out to the guest and explain that it’s still getting traction, and would be beneficial if they shared it.
