175. Persistance and Resilience with SourceBottle Creator Bec Derrington

Bec is the founder of SourceBottle – a free global service that pools together expert sources for journalists, bloggers and reporters in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

Bec was formerly a marketer, business developer and PR professional for mid-to-large corporates and membership associations in the services industry. After the birth of her first child, she started Wagging Tongues consultancy, which she continued working with until she decided the world needed an easier way for journalists and bloggers to find incredible sources for their stories. To make it accessible to everyone, the crowd-sourcing service needed to be free. In 2009, SourceBottle was born.

In late 2015, Bec launched the Influencer HUB app which manages and “houses” bespoke influencer communities. The app grows an invite-only brand community of influencers, helping them convert into life-long brand advocates.

Bec was once a lawyer – albeit for three-and-a-half minutes and in the last century!

“I have started to cut out carbs and things that say they are inflammatory in terms of what are known issues.”

“Oh God! I love food. I love eating food.

“So on weekends… Vegemite on crusty white bread reading a comic for breakfast, cups of tea with my mum – milky and sugary; lots of great seafood and that sort of thing. I have such wonderful memories of food.”

Exercise Routine

“I don’t exercise and I don’t sleep as much as I’d like”.

Do you have a clean eating diet plan?

“I have kind of committed myself to removing a lot of those things from my diet because I’ve made the symptoms so much worst.

“I don’t take it all too seriously. I really don’t. I think, I don’t want to be obsessive about food. It’s something that is wonderful in our lives and I try to enjoy it.”

Who would you love to have dinner with and where?

“I have a huge girl crush on Annabel Crabb and Leigh Sales. They do a great podcast. I love Annabel Crabb; I love the way she talks. I could lose myself for hours just listening to her talk and tell stories. I find her so engaging and entertaining, and her turn of phrases are so infectious. Yeah, it would probably be someone like Annabel Crabb.

“I am lucky enough to love Japanese food. So if I would be prepared to suffer the next day, I’d probably have a massive Okonomiyaki instead of a pancake.”

Last meal on the planet?

“Lots of crackers with cheese and I’d have a big piece of cake, chocolate cake.”

“Well, I’ll say Sashimi. There you go. It’s still fishy”.
