Graham “Skroo” Turner makes building travel empires look easy.
Skroo is CEO of Flight Centre, one of the world’s largest travel agency groups. It all started in the 1970s when Skroo and his friend Spy created the company Topdeck. They bought a double-decker bus, named it Argus and built a really cool, unique company driving young adventurers around to travel destinations. In the ’80s, Skroo saw an opportunity in the air travel sector and took it. The first Flight Centre shop opened in Sydney in 1982, and the rest, as they say, is history. Today, Flight Centre is worth billions and has offices in 23 countries. Yes, you read that right. Billions.
But we’re currently in a pandemic. Flights have been reduced by 80% worldwide. Global tourism has seen a $195 Billion revenue loss. Nobody thought it would last this long, especially Skroo. He had just gotten back from a trip to London in March when things hit the fan. He didn’t have a plan at first but quickly learned that the only way his company was going to make it through this was adaptability.
In this volume, Skroo and I talk about how he’s coped with the everyday surprises of running a travel company during a global pandemic. We get into the ways adaptability has crept into other areas of his life, not just his business. And of course, he gushes about his amazing family, who all happen to be entrepreneurs as well.
