The Simple Power of the ‘Ask Method’

In a recent episode of Should I Start a Podcast, we revisited Ronsley’s talk from the 2016 We Are Podcast conference. The talk covered plenty of topics and is well worth a listen, but in particular, Ronsley hit on some of the fundamental problems people in business and marketing face.

This could be anything from forcing a sales approach without proper relationship building, to being unclear in your unique value proposition or how you communicate it to the world, to missing out on the power that conversations can bring to the table.

There are nuances to each of these issues and no one-size-fits-all solution, but a great place to start is with the ‘ask method’. Written by Ryan Levesque, Ask is a best-selling book featured by Inc. Magazine as their #1 marketing book of the year and by Entrepreneur Magazine as their #2 must-read book. The idea here is quite simple:

Ask People What They Want. Then Give It to Them.

It really can be that straightforward. A lot of entrepreneurs fail because they don’t properly analyse their audience, target demographic or customer base. They simply think, I’ve got a brilliant idea or an innovative product and people are going to love it. The ‘ask method’ turns this on its head and puts people at the centre of whatever your business is or what it may become.

People know what they want from your business, so by engaging with them via social media, IRL events or a podcast, you can feel out whatever it is your ‘tribe’ is after. Podcasting, in particular, offers a direct channel into people’s attention and allows you to find valuable solutions for them. Think about it for a second, if you’ve listened to a podcast for a few years, do you know something about the listener group? Could you accurately predict their tendencies, wants and needs? Odds are pretty good that you could, and that’s without even directly asking. So, the other part of the ask method is to listen when people tell you what they’re after.

This is kind of ground zero from a podcasting perspective. If you want to launch a show that amplifies who you are, builds a community, leverages the power of conversations and takes your business to a new level, then being in tune with your market is an absolute must. There is no better way to start than by asking.
