Paying it Forward: 10 Ways You Can Start Helping Others Today

On the latest episode of Should I Start a Podcast, I went on the Inspiring Business for Good podcast with Harvee Pene. The show is all about using business to help others.

I decided to compile a list of ways that we, as everyday people, can start doing good and helping others. They require any crazy amount of money or extraordinary ability — just the will to make a difference.

Make a Donation

This could be monetary, or it could be furniture, cleaning products, non-perishable food or anything else you might have in your house that others could use. We forget how much junk we accumulate in our houses — why not pass it on to others?

Find Somewhere to Volunteer

If you don’t have a lot of money or stuff, then use your time to help others. Find a soup kitchen, an animal shelter or anywhere else in your local neighbourhood that could use an extra pair of hands.

Check in on Someone

This one barely requires anything but is so important. We get so wrapped up in our daily lives that we forget how many of our close friends and family members are struggling with life. Give someone a call, drop in on their house. They’ll appreciate hearing your voice and knowing you’re thinking about them.

Offer to Babysit

If you’re a parent, you know how time-starved you are. What would you give to have some free time to go relax?

If you can, help some parents that you know and watch their little ones for an afternoon. They won’t forget it.

Listen

Again, another free and simple one. Stop trying to interrupt and quit waiting for your turn to speak, and just listen to others. Listen with authenticity, not to make a point. Try and feel what the person is saying and where they are coming from.

Use Athletics to Give Back

If you like running or biking, look for a charity event in your area. There are so many 5k’s and fun runs for charity.

Download an App

Check out this article for a list of apps that help you help others. Technology can be pretty great if we use it correctly, after all.

Tutor Kids

Even if you don’t consider yourself an academic genius, I’m sure you could handle some first-grade math.

Look up a tutoring program in your local area and help out some youngins in need.

Set up Collection Program at Office, Church, etc.

Canned goods, used clothing, cash. It’s easy to give at work because you’re there every day. It takes barely any effort to set up a donation area.

Use Your Voice

Are you a good writer, a great public speaker, a well-known entrepreneur?

How are you using your voice to help others? Are you advocating for good or just focused on promoting your personal brand everyday? Find ways to amplify a good cause through the gift you have with your voice.

If you only choose one thing from this list you will help to make the world a better place – so what are you waiting for?
