Entrepreneurial Schizophrenia: The Struggle Is Real

“Own it authentically” – what does that even mean? As I sat next to a very close friend Clarissa Rayward, who is an amazing entrepreneur, author, and family lawyer; I asked myself the question while I got her input on the topic. Well it was more that she told me to “Own it authentically.”

Entrepreneur recognition

We were at the Brisbane Young Entrepreneurs Award Ceremony for 2016 where I was selected as a finalist. And as much as I liked the idea that I was one of 5 entrepreneurs in the finals, there was a huge part of me that hated the attention. I did not feel like I had done enough to get this kind of attention.

There are business owners and entrepreneurs that are giving so much, working so hard to make huge impacts across the globe. And here I was, a person that just built Australia’s first audio marketing agency. I don’t think that Amplify is a ground breaking idea compared to Orange Sky Laundry for example or Dwayne Martens at Amazonia. These people are moving ideas, and their industry forward with massive massive impact.

The entrepreneur mind games

Anyway, as part of this whole weird mind game I was playing with myself, I got told by my wife that I need to appreciate where I was more. I also got told by Andrew Griffiths that I needed to harden up with a teaspoon of cement. In his words he said, “You are a Key Person of Influence. That is what happens to them. They get noticed. They get the good deals.

Why do I feel like I have so much more to do and this is not any place or time to celebrate? And now that I write this, I feel like a clown that is in such a brilliant position to make change, and I’m so ungrateful. But, I’m not.

Conversations with entrepreneurs

I’m very grateful. However, this is all new for me and I don’t know how to handle this. I don’t know how long this will last and most importantly, I don’t want to get attached to the recognition rather than the mission. The idea that we at Amplify promote the game changers. The entrepreneurs that move their industry forward really is a mission in itself. And I am afraid that the recognition might go to my head. I need to be accountable to the impact that we can make as an agency.

Imagine if we can capture the ideas, the thoughts and the conversations of these amazing businesses who we love working with. Imagine if we can use those conversations to create massive impact that will change the world in multiple industries. It is cool to be part of their journeys.

I am grateful. I am blessed. And just like most entrepreneurs, I deal with the voices in my head.
